When to get motorcycle insurance in Florida?

Thinking of getting a motorcycle? Maybe you already own a bike and you are seeing if there are cheaper insurance rates out there. Our best advice is to secure the best motorcycle insurance before your wheels get rolling! Accidents happen whether you're riding your motorcycle or towing it on a trailer. We have seen countless types of accidents involving motorcycles, and unfortunately, some people wish they had done their homework to find which insurance company is the best for motorcycles. As a Seminole County, Florida insurance agency for motorcycles, we recommend comparing insurance rates and policy coverage. Some bike owners may want more liability insurance while others may want to include coverage for towing, labor, roadside assistance or coverage for custom parts.

We are often asked what does motorcycle insurance cover and what motorcycle insurance do I need?

Both of these are fair questions. In Florida, if you own a motorcycle it’s not mandatory to have motorcycle insurance when you register your motorcycle. If you cause an accident, you are responsible for demonstrating financial responsibility. What does this mean?

There are a couple of ways a motorcycle owner can show they are financially responsible.

#1 – showing proof of a Financial Responsibility Certificate from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. To qualify for this certificate, riders must prove a net worth of at least $40,000.00

#2 – A motorcycle owner would show proof that they have liability insurance coverage with at least $10,000 in bodily injury coverage per person and $20,000 for bodily injury per accident. One would also have $10,000 for property damage. Some motorcycle owners opt for comprehensive and collision coverage as well as uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Other coverage available can include rental reimbursement, personal property, and medical payments.

Which motorcycle insurance is best?

The best insurance on a motorcycle includes a few types of coverage.

Liability insurance on a motorcycle is the core requirement of such a policy. This type of coverage will pay for damages and injuries to others if the rider is at fault in an accident. In Florida liability insurance is not mandatory on a motorcycle. We recommend motorcycle owners carry bodily injury and property damage liability (BI/PD). This type of coverage pays for damages to other vehicles and injuries to others if the motorcycle owner is liable in an accident. BI/PD coverage will also help pay for legal expenses up to your coverage limit if you are sued.

We encourage motorcycle riders to contact our insurance agents at Brockman Insurance Group to discuss the best insurance on a motorcycle. Each person’s coverage needs will be different.

How can I lower my motorcycle insurance cost?

There are several ways to do this. The first and most obvious way is to be an excellent driver and complete a motorcycle safety course. Check with your local motorcycle shop or Google for motorcycle safety courses in your community. Other ways to get low-cost motorcycle insurance include increasing your deductible, keeping your policy current, avoiding motorcycles with modified engines and maximizing all available discounts.
